The Nigeria of my dream is a nation-state founded on justice and honesty of purpose. This is so because all great nations of the world thrive on justice. I want a Nigeria that has zero tolerance for corruption, religious and tribal bigotry. Indeed, I want to see a Nigeria where people will proudly say “I am a Nigerian living in so, so and so state” and not a Nigerian of a particular state of origin! This arrangement will unite the people, eliminate mutual suspicion among the people and remedy the indigene-settler induced crisis ravaging Nigeria especially in the northern parts of the country.

I have a dream that sooner than later, the votes of Nigerians will count and we shall bid adieu to electoral fraud. I envisage that in no distant future, our democracy will be built on one man, one vote – the only condition for the sustenance of constitutional democracy. I believe that if the people’s votes count, the leadership will be more accountable to all Nigerians. This will positively impact on all sectors of society because politics is the super structure upon which the economy rests. Once you fix the polity, you remedy so many socio-economic problems plaguing the society. Though this sounds like a tall dream, it is possible with electoral reforms, empowerment and positive attitudes by Nigerians. Continue.......

Whining wont help you, rebrand or go down. APC tells PDP

Read the Press statement from APC

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed the communique issued by the PDP National Caucus on the so-called political developments in the nation as a rehash of the opposition party’s infantile whining which will not save it from going down unless it rebrands most urgently. ”It is time for the PDP to take a long, hard look at itself in the mirror and change everything that is ugly about the party, instead of wasting its energy and time on irrelevancies,” the party said in a statement issued in Lagos on Friday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed.

It said the PDP cannot continue to do things in its trademark old, crooked ways and expect a different result. ”The PDP just doesn’t get it, despite being the architect of its own fall from power. The days of winning elections with the aid of slush funds, brigandage, deceit and rigging are gone forever, hence the PDP must return to the drawing board to fashion out decent and empirical ways of repackaging and selling itself to Nigerians, just like the opposition did when they decided to come together,” APC said

Democracy does not necessarily translate into the disappearance of crises and dilemmas, (even trilemmas, quadrilemmas or more) in a country, either developed, developing or perhaps evolutionary.

Built into the fabric of the right to choose is also the right to make mistakes and so, across Africa at this moment, in Nigeria, Tanzania, Cote d’Ivoire, Burundi, Guinea Conakry, Rwanda, the lessons are being driven home, as elections are being held or have been held or will be held, that even as democracy spreads within the continent, the tension between stabilization and consolidation, trade offs and efficiency, pessimism and optimism, ethnocentrism and nationalism, remains a major concern. #MustRead: Values and ethos: A new Nigeria is possible (2) by Eugenia Abu

IN a special edition of THISDAY to commemorate the first 100 days of Buhari, ace NTA broadcaster, Eugenia Abu, spoke so passionately about how indiscipline, disorderliness and poor national ethos cripple the potentials of our nation. In her piece, “The Need for Value Re-Orientation,” she narrated her experience at the Murtala Mohammed Airport, Lagos, trying to board an international flight, and observed how some Nigerians had no regard for order, decency and protocol. “There has to be something in the brain of those who think everyone else except them are smart when they jump queues, break traffic lights, deliver poor customer service, are rude in public spaces, have poor work ethics and everything else in between.”

At home and abroad, this sort of loathsome behaviour has for a long time come to define what it is to be a Nigerian. For many foreign nationals, Nigeria is simply a jungle – a place where common-sense is in acute shortage, where the laws of reason do not apply and where decent people cannot fit in. But this is not altogether true.

According to Abu, “Nigeria is a good country and can still be if the national ethos is transformed.” When WAI was launched on March 20, 1984, the campaign was designed to address the perceived lack of public morality and civic responsibility in the Nigerian society. Unruly Nigerians were ordered to form neat queues at bus stops, under the watchful eyes of whip-wielding soldiers. Civil servants who failed to show up on time at work were humiliated and forced to do “frog jumps.” Minor offences carried long sentences. Examination malpractices in schools were severely punished. Counterfeiting, arson and drug peddling could lead to death penalty. Continue.......

The eleventh point of #15WaysToBeTheChangeYouWantToSeeInNigeria is

11. Be Nationalistic: Been Nationalistic is having strong feelings of love for and pride in your country, so that you think that it is better than any other. No one else will sing the praises of our Nation, we can’t expect South Africans or Brazilians to carry our flags, sing our anthems, play our matches, celebrate our independence, tweet great stuff, treat Nigerians well and speak positive of Nigeria, do we? Nigerians must take pride in this Nation and accord her the accolades we desire to be conferred by other Nations. Believe in the New Nigeria dream, advocate for her good, do right and be right in our homes, offices and on the streets, treasure this land and we will reap of its great treasure anon. We all love those who value us and hang around those who celebrate us. Let’s do same for our country, let’s value her and celebrate her. Nigeria is what Nigerians see it to be and show it to be. Like the slogan “Good people, Great Nation,” we must uphold this Nation with pride and sell Nigeria as a great brand in the community of Nations. #IAmProudToBeNigerian.

There was an emotional outpouring in the mainstream media on Monday, October 19 over the death of one of the most celebrated journalists, Dele Giwa. This year marked the 29th anniversary after his death. Dele Giwa was murdered in cold blood through a mail bomb at his residence on that fateful day.

Speculations surrounding his death pointed accusing fingers at the military government in power then. There was an outcry for justice but 29 years later, the culprits are yet to be caught, let alone brought to book. Despite the authority’s incompetence to fish out the murderers, nothing has been done to honour Giwa for his contribution to investigative journalism.
This was what led some aggrieved members of the society to protest that a School of Journalism should be built in his honour. It is not known if the federal government will heed to their clarion call. Continue......

You do drugs again, am gone for good - Khloe to Lamar

If Lamar Odom shows any signs of going back to the world of drugs, Khloe Kardashian is set to leave him for good, so say sources connected with Khloe.

Our sources say Khloe is annoyed by people on social media who are calling her naive for dropping the divorce. TMZ broke the story, Khloe and Lamar both signed off to dismiss the divorce case, which was all but final.

We're told Khloe knows better than anyone about Lamar's battle with drugs. Feelings aside, she's game to drop the divorce partly because Lamar has no one else in his life to help him recover. And, by the way, we're told Lamar is on the Kardashian health insurance policy and he needs to stay on.

Lamar's medical bills will total in the many millions, and our sources say he doesn't have the financial wherewithal to handle it on his own.

It's murky, because if this were just about health insurance, Khloe could easily buy it for him and go through with the divorce.
Bottom line ... if he goes back to drugs, she's gone.

Ooni stool: How 40 year old Ogunwusi was picked by kingmakers

Ooni stool: How Ogunwusi was picked by kingmakersIFE kingmakers yesterday defended their choice of Prince Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi as Ooni, saying they followed due process in picking him.

The Laadin of Ife Traditional Council, Chief Adetoye Olatunde Odewole, said there was no rancour during the process.

He debunked the claims of a ruling house that the process was “faulty and fraudulent”.

Sooko Adeleke Adewoyin of the Lafogido ruling house had described Ogunwusi’s selection as “faulty and fraudulent”, saying the family would soon come out with its position on the exercise.

But Odewole told reporters at the outer hall of the Ooni’s palace: “We followed due process by using the 1980 Ife Chieftaincy Declaration to pick a candidate from the Giesi Ruling House, which by that declaration is in line to produce the Ooni after the passing to glory of Oba Okunade Sijuwade. We also consulted Ifa oracle before all of us.

The 14 kingmakers unanimously voted for the candidacy of Prince Ogunwusi”.

Installation rites for the Ooni begin tomorrow in the ancient town.

"I have absolutely nothing against the coach (Oliseh). As for me, I still remain loyal to coach Sunday Oliseh and I want to believe he understands my decision. My decision has nothing to do with the coach, who is a brave man, a technically sound person, my decision has nothing to go against his vision for the Super Eagles. Me out of the team will equally ease pressure on the coach and it will enable the younger players to fight harder for the team.

Pictures of the two leading Argentine presidential candidates: Daniel Scioli (left) and Mauricio Macri
Argentina will face a run-off election next month after neither presidential candidate gained enough votes to win the poll outright.

With 86% of the votes counted, Mr Scioli was marginally ahead with 35.9% of the vote, while Mr Macri had 35.2%.

To win outright in the first round, a candidate needed 45% of the vote or a minimum of 40% as well as a 10-point lead over the nearest rival.

"What happened today will change politics in this country," Mr Macri, the mayor of Buenos Aires, told supporters. Read more on BBC
