#MustRead: Quotes On Patriotism

Hello All,

I have some quotes on Patriotism to keep our minds on our envisioned Nigeria. Read them below:

Patriotism is your conviction that this country is superior to all other countries because you were born in it.

A man’s country is not a certain area of land, of mountains, rivers and woods, but it is a principle; and patriotism is loyalty to that principle.

Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country. Continue......

Africa's child brides expected to double by 2050 - UNICEF

In an alarming new study, UNICEF estimates that the total number of child brides in Africa will rise from 125 million to 310 million by 2050.

Slow rates of reduction and ballooning populations are the main cause of the projected increases.

Early marriage is most prevalent in a vast belt across Africa stretching from Somalia in the east to Guinea in the west.

When I saw his face I thought: 'I really hate that man'

Fatimetou, 13

Entrenched religious and cultural practices, and limited economic prospects, push girls into the margins and into harmful early marriages.

"When you look at the projected numbers, it is particularly alarming to us because we know the impact on a girl who gets married before the age of 18, the impact on her health, the impact on education, the impact on the whole country," Manuel Fontaine, UNICEF's Regional Director for West and Central Africa, told CNN.

He says the practice feeds into a cycle of poverty that could be broken by focusing on girls' rights and education.

Fontaine adds that the practice is often anchored in cultural tradition, so entire communities need to be mobilized to combat it.

Pastor T.B Joshua along with some engineers will be arraigned today November 30th before a Lagos State High Court in Ikeja over the death of 116 people in the Synagogue Church of all Nations building collapse which occurred in September 2014.

#MotivationalMonday - You need more than a shower to get through the day. You also need.

TGIF- Thank God it's Friday, but OGIM- Oh God It's Monday. What did you say at the early hours that ushered us into another new but mostly dreadful day- Monday. Like the quote above, we don't need a new year to make a change. All we need is a Monday. The first working day of the week, offers us a huge opportunity to start afresh. But the weekend rest seems never enough to Thank God it's Monday. So beyond taking a shower, we also need to motivate ourselves into our best energy to make the best of the week, as we pursue our dreams and aspirations, knowing "Nothing is impossible, the world itself says 'I'm possible'! Continue for some motivational dose that will give you the required drive for the week. Enjoy it and soar on!

It's a break of a New Nigeria. I look through my eyes of faith and I know Nigeria will cross over all her troubles into her promised land of peace, prosperity and justice. However, in this era of change, we all have a role to play.

Are you are an Activist, a Politician, a Civilian, a Blogger , a Change maker, a Media house, a voice on social media, are you a Nigerian? A dream is the ability to see beyond our present circumstance and believe in the face of contrary evidence that Nigeria will rise again! Nigeria will not just rise above her problems, but She will rise as the Giant of Africa and a force to be reckoned with in the world's economy. Yes we can!

#MustRead: Inspiring story of Bashir Suleiman, the swagalicious wheel barrow pusher.

It's not what you do but how you do what you do that makes the difference. This story told by a Facebook user will tell you better. Read it below:

His name is Bashir Suleiman, he’s a Mai-barrow and a proud one at that. I was privileged to have him gather my groceries and produce for me as I shopped in the market today.

First of all he was very well dressed with his clothes well ironed as if he was going to a proper office work and I was told by the fruit seller who saw my initial surprise when Bashir approached me that it was his custom to dress well daily to his Mai-barrow job. It got even more interesting when I caught a whiff of his “perfume” and noticed his socked feet in a pair of well polished sandals. Other barrow pushers approached me but with my curiosity already piqued and biased towards Bashir, I felt it an honor to have him gather my stuff for today. Continue........

The festive season is here again and lots of people can't wait for all that comes with it. The partying, drinking, eating, socializing, beautiful lights, family getaways just to mention a few. While these seasons are worth celebrating, most of us look at Patriotism these days like it's another "Celebration." We hear reminders about “the true meaning” of the celebration season and we may even mutter a few guilt-ridden words to that effect ourselves—but each of us spend more time and thought in parties, gift-giving, and the other paraphernalia of a secularized holiday than we do deepening our devotion to the true meaning.

Yes the true meaning of patriotism. Nigerians can get really patriotic, especially on Independence Day in October, Democracy day in May and the rest. Walk down the street in Nigeria and ask one citizen after another what patriotism means and with few exceptions, you’ll get a passel of the most self-righteous but superficial and often dead-wrong answers. Nigeria’s Founders, the men and women who gave us reason to be patriotic in the first place, would think we’ve lost our minds if they could see how we have watered down acts of patriotism. Who to become the Governor of Kogi State- The case between APC, PDP, INEC and the Law.

The death of Abubakar Audu, the All Progressives Congress(APC) candidate who was about to be declared the new Governor of Kogi State has in no little form brought about crisis in the State. 15 Ways To Be The Change You Want To See In Nigeria (1)

Daily thank God for Nigeria- As simple as it sounds, how many Nigerians wake up everyday and say thank you God for my home- Nigeria. As bad as Nigeria seems, it still provide a space on this universe where you call your Nation. A look at the 500 or 48 Nigerians recently deported from the Uk drives this point home for me. Inspite of the things that are not working, your home can never be bad for you. We must take up the responsibility of making it a better place.  For those of us who are dreamers and believers in Nigeria, we see and acknowledge a lot of good in the country and we are mindful to wake up daily and thank God for her. #ProudToBeANigerian. Funmi Iyanda was awarded an Honorary Fellowship by the University of Cumbria in recognition of her significant global contribution to human rights and sustainability. Below is her Investiture Address:

Vice-Chancellor, University Staff, Distinguished Guests, Graduates, Ladies and Gentlemen, family and friends, thank you so much for those kind words and indeed for this wonderful honour. I’m very grateful, not just for this invitation to be an Honorary Fellow, but to be invited to share it with so many gifted individuals that it’s been my pleasure to meet today.

This fellowship is important to me because my father always wanted me to be a medical doctor, since that wasn’t happening l thought l’d get a doctorate to please him but l never got round to it so perhaps he’d posthumously accept this in lieu. Also l have never worn a graduation gown, so it was on my bucket list.

This lovely university is close to my heart because it has educated some of the people dearest to me, accepted my country men and women with warmth and provided me great opportunities to share my rather skewed world view. I am excited at the prospects of future opportunities for mis-education that this fellowship will mean. Now let me share a few stories with you because stories are nice. Continue........

Interesting Read: Is it Black Friday or Red Friday?

It seems Black Friday has come to stay. Power is going to ‘change hands’ this weekend heading into next week.

A lot of people are going to make tons of money. Cash registers will ring non-stop while phones and email boxes will be buzzing with credit alerts (and debit alerts). Many will smile all the way to the bank while others will be left with merchandise, happy they got it on sale but wondering if they did not encroach into other budget items. Some schools are still sending reminders to parents to pay up first term fees and before you say ‘Jack Robinson’, second term fees will fall due. One thing is sure this season; it will be Black Friday for some and Red Friday for others. What is it going to be for you? Black Friday or Red Friday?

Black Friday, which originated from the US is gradually becoming a global phenomenon. Local retailers and banks have jumped on the bandwagon, creating hype and asking their customers to save by spending using their cards. One bank offered to help you save by setting aside a portion of your spend in a dedicated savings account, so the more you spend, the more you save! You earn points by spending on your card, so rather than save directly, do it indirectly by spending! It makes me wonder what amount of spending will generate enough savings to cover your bills in January when the dust settles.
