Historic - First all-women flight deck crew from Zimbabwe flew the B737 – 200 from Harare to Victoria Falls.

Captain Chipo M. Matimba and Captain Elizabeth Simbi Petros have become the first female captains in Zimbabwe’s male-dominated airline industry.

The historical flight was operated by two full-fledged captains who successfully flew Air Zimbabwe’s Boeing 737 from the country’s capital to Victoria Falls. They later took to social media to express their emotions with friends, relatives and fellow citizens.
Captain Matimba wrote: “History has been made! First all female flight deck crew on the Air Zimbabwe Boeing 737! Two CAPTAINS!! Absolute pleasure Captain Elizabeth Simbi Petros! #FLYBABES. #PaintingTheSkyPink!”.

An excited Captain Simbi Petros also commented on the flight writing:“Air Zim First:- All Women 737 Flight Deck Crew!!!! Flt to Vic Falls This Morning. Was A pleasure Skipper Chipo Matimba!!!!!!”

The news was widely covered by various news sites and was expectedly greeted with much celebration by Zimbabweans on social media platforms.

The number of women involved in the aviation industry during the last two decades has steadily increased and women can be found in nearly every aviation occupation today.

However, the numbers are small by comparison. Women pilots, for example, represent only 6% of the total pilot population, according to the International Society of Women Airline Pilots.
