US To Organize Trainings For Government's Spokespersons

James Entwistle, the United States ambassador to Nigeria, has called for coordination among government spokespersons to resist Boko Haram’s propagandas.

The Nation reports that Entwistle spoke at the opening of the Federal Government Spokespersons’ workshop organized by the US embassy in collaboration with Nigeria Union of Journalists.

The ambassador stressed that the aim of the training organized by request of President Muhammadu Buhari is to put emphasis on countering radical narratives and help the government to create a coordinated front.

“Effective government press operations are critical to communicating clear and timely information to the public. Your ability to deliver President Buhari’s messages about counter-terrorism, ending corruption, and furthering economic development are important to the future of Nigeria,” Entwistle said.

According to the ambassador, “open and unfettered access to information is the essential ingredient that promotes democracy and accountability in governance”.

Entwistle called on special assistants to the president on media and publicity, Femi Adesina and Shehu Garba, and other government spokespersons to attend the forum as their work carries a tremendous amount of responsibility.

“It will shape public knowledge and perceptions of the government. Doing this job effectively, in a fast-paced, technology-driven world requires cutting edge skills,” he added.

Earlier this year, the US announced that it was planning to establish a partnership in training Nigerian law enforcement personnel. Entwistle said that the US government was ready to train Nigerian police officers in a bid to ensure that they are up to what is obtained in advanced countries.
