Breaking news: Asia welcomes year 2016

Following the variations in global time zone, some countries have welcomed year 2016 while others are still expecting.

Samoa and Kiribati were the first countries to usher in 2016 followed by New Zealand which put up an impressive fireworks display, reported to be the biggest in the city’s history.
 
Nigeria and some other African countries will welcome year 2016 at exactly 12:00 midnight.

FG will create 1m jobs in 2016 – Osinbajo

The Federal Government will create no fewer than one million direct jobs in 2016, the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, has said A statement issued by Laolu Akande, his Senior Special Assistant (SSA) on Media and Publicity, quoted Osinbajo as saying that another one million poor Nigerians would benefit from the first phase of the Conditional Cash Transfer Scheme.

The statement, released to newsmen on Thursday in Abuja, said that the VP made the remark during an interactive session with a cross section of Nigerian Community in Burkina Faso. Osinbajo was in Burkina Faso to represent President Muhammadu Buhari at the inauguration of the newly elected president of that country Roch Marc Christian Kabore.

21 injured in an Air Canada flight turbulence, passengers narrate the ordeal.

A Canada-bound airliner was forced to make an emergency landing after severe turbulence injured 21 passengers, including three children, officials said.

The Air Canada flight from Shanghai to Toronto was diverted to Calgary after the turbulence hit.

Eight passengers suffered neck and back injuries and 13 more were taken to hospital for observation.

Nigerian restaurant allegedly 'served human flesh to customers'

Nigerian restaurant served human flesh to customers 
A viral story have emerged yesterday and it was reported on Yahoo News, about a Nigerian restaurant in Anambra State that sells human flesh as meat to customers. The restaurant have been shut down, and the story could be hoax according to the report.

When police raided the restaurant they discovered human heads that were still bleeding.

According to the story, a priest who ate at the restaurant was presented with a bill of 700 Naira, or around $4.40, which is a considerable amount of money with millions survive on less than a $1 a day.

The Immigration was able to stop them from making the trip on the allegations of exporting the baby without mother's concept after Coco had false fully claimed the baby was hers. A-Ibom Assembly elects first female Deputy Speaker


The lawmaker representing Okobo state constituency and Chair Person, House Committee on Women Affairs and Social Welfare Matters, Mrs. Felicia Bassey, has been elected the Deputy Speaker of Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly.  

In a statement in Uyo, yesterday, the Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker, Mr. Kufre Okon, said Bassey emerged the first female Deputy Speaker during Tuesday’s plenary, to replace the former Deputy Speaker, Mr. Effiong Bassey, representing Oron/Udung Uko state constituency, whose election was nullified last week by the Appeal Court in Abuja.

It added that the Speaker, Mr. Onofiok Luke, who administered the oath of office on the new Deputy Speaker charged her to live up to the expectation of the sixth Assembly while discharging her legislative duties.

The statement added that other members who spoke after the plenary described her new office as well deserved, and expressed confidence in her ability to discharge the functions of the office optimally.

Biafran Leader, Nnamdi Kanu Apologises To President Buhari


Reports credited to The Punch have it that Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and founder of Radio Biafra, has apologised to President Muhammadu Buhari for referring to him (Buhari) as a terrorist, evil and a paedophile in his radio broadcasts.
 
Kanu, who has been in DSS custody over charges of treason and other ancillary offences, it was gathered, will also write a private letter of apology to the president.
 
This apology was contained in a statement which the 48-year-old pro-Biafran agitator made available to the DSS on October 23.

In the statement, Kanu, whose trial recently suffered a set back on Tuesday, December 29, 2015, after the court refused to sit over his case, also apologized to former president Goodluck Jonathan and Igbo elders for “some uncomplimentary things” he said about them.

CHAN 2016: Eagles to drop two players before South Africa trip

According to Eagles Media Officer, Toyin Ibitoye, the number of players in home based Eagles camp currently preparing for the CHAN 2016 billed for Rwanda in January 2016 will reduce to 23 before their departure to South Africa.

He noted that a total of 25 players are currently in camp under the watchful eyes of the technical crew and they would have to make the decision on those to drop.

“We have 25 players in camp now with Salami the only player yet to rejoin the camp, it’s likely he is working on a transfer abroad,” a team official disclosed yesterday.

Badagry: Girl narrates how she escaped been used for rituals by her iman lover.


Mowo 11, a suburb of Olorunda Local Council Development Area of Badagry area in Lagos State, was yesterday thrown into pandemonium, as an Islamic cleric, Mallam Shehu, popularly referred to as Alhaji Sambo, attempted to use his 20-year-old lover, Busayo Amdalat, for money ritual.
 
According to Vanguard, the victim, who resides in Ibeju-Lekki, was said to have visited the cleric at Mowo Phase 2 in Badagry to spend the Christmas holidays.

It was gathered that in the early hours of yesterday, the cleric had a visitor known as Ifa and they asked the victim to put on a white cloth and when she did, the cleric and his accomplice hit Busayo with an iron rod on her head.

The Ogun Government has concluded arrangements to connect civil servants to Free Voice Over Internet Protocol to enhance productivity and hitch-free communication in the discharge of their official duties.

Government is also set to establish a data centre across the three senatorial districts in the state to give room for rural participation in governance.

How we’ll fund N5,000 welfare scheme —Lai Mohammed


The Federal Government, yesterday, explained how it would fund the N5,000 monthly welfare payment to vulnerable Nigerians just as it reaffirmed that the Boko Haram insurgency had been technically suppressed.

Mohammed, who was accompanied by his Special Assistant, Mr. Segun Adeyemi, was received by Vanguard’s Editor-in-Chief, Mr. Gbenga Adefaye and Acting Editor, Mr. Eze Anaba, said beneficiaries of the N5,000 monthly payment would be required to meet conditions, including enrolment into the country’s development agenda.

The minister also disclosed that the insurgents had been restricted into two local government areas of the 30 local government areas they controlled at the onset of the Muhammadu Buhari administration.

On how the funding of the N5,000 welfare scheme would be achieved, Mohammed said: “What we want to achieve by our social intervention of which the conditional transfer is just one part, is to move out millions of Nigerians from poverty. That is why we have this half a trillion naira social intervention.

“Part of what we intend to do with the half a trillion naira is to train market women, artisans and unemployed graduates in the art of management and also give them loans to start their own businesses. Part of our social intervention also includes the transfer of N5,000 to the most vulnerable people.

Pres. Buhari holds first media chat 7pm today.


President Muhammadu Buhari will host his first Presidential Media Chat today (Wednesday, December 30, 2015).

In the course of the programme, which will be broadcast live on the network services of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) and the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), President Buhari will answer questions from a panel of journalists on a broad range of current national issues.

A statement by the Special Adviser to the President (Media & Publicity), Mr. Femi Adesina, said the Presidential Media Chat will begin at 7.00pm.

The statement said other television and radio stations in the country may hook-up to NTA and FRCN to relay the programme to their viewers and listeners.

Ex-Minister Musiliu Obanikoro has reacted to a report by Sahara Reporters that he is hiding from Nigerian investigators abroad. The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed has restated commitment of the Federal Government to tracking the location of the missing Chibok girls.

Mohammed said it was important for the military to adopt less lethal procedures compared with the drastic measures employed by neigbouring countries along the Sambisa Forest.

He said the public should commend the military and provide needed information to further decapitate the insurgents.

China unveils two-child policy

It's official. From January 1, 2016 China will allow two children for every couple.

Chinese lawmakers rubber-stamped the new legislation Sunday during a session of the National People's Congress Standing Committee, which governs the country's laws, the state-run Xinhua news agency reported.

"The state advocates that one couple shall be allowed to have two children," according to the newly revised Law on Population and Family Planning.

This effectively dismantles the remnants of the country's infamous one-child policy that had been eased in recent years.

WHO to declare Guinea Ebola free, Guineans to celebrate with concerts & fireworks.

Guinea is to be declared free of Ebola by the World Health Organization (WHO), two years after the epidemic began there.

Guineans are expected to celebrate the landmark with concerts and fireworks.

The disease killed more than 2,500 people in the country and a further 9,000 in Sierra Leone and Liberia.

How We Prevented 14 Female Suicide Bombers From Entering Maiduguri – Army

Forte Oil fined N4.2 million for hoarding petrol in Kano

 
A committee set up by Kano State governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, to prevent hoarding of petrol and selling above official rate, has fined a Forte Oil filling station in the state the sum of N4.2million.

The state commissioner for ​c​ommerce, Rabiu Bako, who is the chairman of the committee, told Premium Times correspondent ​by phone that the station was fined for both hoarding of the product and selling above pump price at night.

Minister of Labour & Employment Chris Ngige speaks on those that will benefit from FG's N5k stipend

Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige says unemployed graduates, market women and the Civilian Joint Task Force in the north-east are those that have been targeted to be beneficiaries of the Federal Government’s N5,000 stipend.

Ngige gave further clarifications in Abuja during an interview with journalists today December 28th. He explained that the N5,000 stipend would be disbursed through a social security scheme.

We’ll defeat Boko Haram as planned, FG insists


The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed has expressed optimism that despite the recent attacks by insurgent, the Federal Government led by President Muhammadu Buhari’s would technically defeat Boko Haram before the end of this December deadline.
