Peremabiri community in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area of Bayelsa State is under siege as suspected militant group invaded the community last Tuesday, shooting sporadically and forcing the people to scamper for safety. The attack is coming four days to the conduct of the election in the area.

Confirming the development in a live telephone programme on the state-owned media Glory FM monitored in Yenagoa, the Director of Publicity, Restoration Campaign Organisation, an agency of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr. Jonathan Obuebite, said the attacks were reportedly carried out by a militant group led by General Eris Paul, a.k.a Ogunboss.

The reports from the community, according to the director of publicity, stated that the shootings which lasted for several hours, forced the people to scamper for safety, while the business and commercial activities in the area were paralysed.

Also, some of the residents, as reliably informed were contemplating relocating to the nearest communities if necessary security measures are not put in place before the conduct of the supplementary election in the local government area on Saturday.

This development may affect the distribution of electoral materials which was billed to commence yesterday as announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) last Monday.

Condemning what is being described as a state of insecurity in the area, Obuebite said it was high time relevant government agencies stepped up their games at ensuring a hitch-free poll in the area and, also bring into book the perpetrators of the dastardly act.

Obuebite recalled that Governor Seriake Dickson had during a crowded world press conference, aired live on major Radio and TV stations across the country, drew the attention of the of the world to the plot by the APC to rig the election by unleashing violence and mayhem in the supplementary election scheduled for this weekend in Southern Ijaw.

He said: “I want to remind the public that Dickson only yesterday, while addressing a world press conference, drew the attention of the public to plot by the APC to rig the rerun election in Southern Ijaw by further unleashing violence.

The attack on Peremabiri by militants led by General Ogunbos has vindicated our position as a party.”

While condemning the act of violence on his people, Obuebite further called on the security agencies to swiftly mobilise its men to Peremabiri to arrest the situation and bring the perpetrators to book.

As part of efforts to stay in constant communication with the people of Peremabiri and keep tract of the situation, the campaign spokesman urged the people to call the hotlines as follows:
