T’tennis: Nigeria finish second in Egypt

Nigeria have finished second behind hosts, Egypt, at the 2016 ITTF Junior Circuit Egypt Open.

The tournament, which began on March 23, ended on Sunday, but the final standings were released by the ITTF on Monday.

Nigeria’s four boys – Abayomi Animasahun, Amadi Omeh, Azeez Solanke and Akomolafe Sunday – finished behind the hosts with one gold and three silver. The hosts won six gold, six silver and three bronze to finish tops. India were third with one gold and one bronze.

In the junior team event, Egypt claimed gold in the boys and girls singles as well as the doubles. Egypt’s Marwan Abdelwahab and Mariam Abdelaziz won the cadet boys’ singles and cadet girls’ singles titles while Rinad Fathy and Eman Taha won the cadet girls’ doubles crown with Hend Fathy emerging as the winner of the mini-cadet girls’ event.

Nigeria’s gold came in the cadet boys’ doubles, when the duo Omeh and Solanke defeated Ammar Attia and Omar Elsafty. Nigeria’s first silver came from the boys’ mini-cadet singles when Animasahun lost to Inida’s Payas Jain. Solanke lost to Egypt’s Abdelwahab in the cadet boys’ singles final to win the second silver for Nigeria while the third silver was from the boys’ junior team event, when the Nigerians lost to Egypt in the final.

Nigeria paraded no girls at the competition but President of the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation, Enitan Oshodi, believes the players, who attended would learn from the tournament.
