Advertising practitioners, under the aegis of the Association of Advertising Agencies of Nigeria (AAAN), have expressed the hope that the country could emerge winner in the 38 edition of the Leories Awards which is slated to hold in Durban, South Africa fromAugust 18-21, 2016.

They stressed that Nigeria’s chances of winning the award was bright because most of the advertising campaigns done in the country were of international standard.

Speaking on the prospects of Nigerian advertising firms winning the awards, Chief Operating Officer of 7EVEN INTERACTIVE Limited, Mr. Taiwo Agboola, said that there had been consistent growth in the advertising industry in Nigeria in the last few years as most practitioners that produce campaigns now ensure that they conform to international standards.

Agboola, however, stated that one of the problems Nigeria advertising practitioners faced was the manner they entered for the awards.

He said: “We have done international standard work, some agencies here also do it, but I think, maybe it is the way that we enter for these awards that is different.”

Also speaking on the issue, the immediate past president of AAAN, Mr. Kelechi Nwosu, noted that Nigerian advertising practitioners had a great chance of winning at the 2016 Leories next month.

Nwosu, however, expressed fears that such dream may elude the country because most of the practitioners did not enter for the awards.

The AAAN boss noted that the award was just beginning to gain grounds in African countries since it was introduced to the continent a few years ago.

“Our chances are good at the Loeries, but I don’t think many Nigerian advertising practitioners entered for it. They just started the African section of the Leories three or four years ago, so I think it has not gained a lot of grounds yet. Like I said, our chances are good, but many Nigerian advertising agencies did not enter for the awards categories,” he stressed.

On his part, Managing Director SO&U, Mr. Udeme Ufot, said that Nigerian adverting agencies can win at the Leories Awards next month in South Africa, but however, added that his agency did not enter for the awards.

It will be recalled that DDB Lagos became the first Nigerian agency to win a Loerie Award in 2013 after being honoured with the Silver Loeries category for its “Speechless” campaign for Girl Hub/Nike Foundation at the 35th Loeries Award held in Cape Town, South Africa.
