Nigeria at 56: What Education was like before independence.

As Nigeria celebrates its Independence on Saturday, it is imperative to recapitulate the role education played in gaining our freedom from Britain 56 years ago. Foremost nationalists like the late Chief Anthony Enahoro, the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo, the late Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe and the late Sardauna of Sokoto, Ahmadu Bello, who fought for our independence did so not through arms and ammunition, but through the power of the pen which they derived through education.

The aforementioned nationalists had were brave enough to challenge the colonial masters due to their access to quality education. Anthony Enahoro, who moved the motion for our independence was educated at Government School, Uromi, Government School Owo and King’s College, Lagos. He was not educated in any private school, all the schools he attended were government schools.

Naira crashes to N465/ USD as CBN issues new directives on domiciliary accounts usage

As Naira came under fresh pressures in the parallel market Wednesday, the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, issued more directives restricting usage of domiciliary accounts by bank customers, apparently to stem the pressures and improve official supply of foreign exchange to the interbank market.

As a result of the pressure, Naira crashed to between N460 and N465/ USD1, against the opening rate of N445/USD1 in the parallel market segment, though the interbank rate depreciated just marginally to N312.9/ USD1, against N310 earlier in the week. Letter to my countrymen: Averting an economic meltdown via the right type of asset sales.

atedo-o
In my previous capacity as the Chairman of the Technical Committee of the National Council on Privatisation up until May 2015, I canvassed for the privatisation of the power sector, sale of NITEL and pushed for the sale of the refineries and the passage of the transport reform bills before time ran out on the last administration.

The Nigerian economy has since taken a turn for the worse. We are now confronted by the twin evils of economic stagnation (2.06% contraction of real GDP in the second quarter of 2016) and a high inflation rate (above 17%). Stagnation + Inflation = Stagflation.

MustRead: CAN ONLY YOU CHANGE NIGERIA?

In a country with an average population of 170 million, what difference can only one person make?

Was told a perplexing story by a friend about an incident that occurred on a major drive in Gwarinpa, Abuja. I was been driven by the friend and a driver in another car helped us to kick start a well needed discussion when he displayed the usual road user misbehavior in Nigeria. Once we were through that, he started to narrate an incident that happened earlier.

In a regular after work traffic, a driver instead of joining the holdup and wait for his turn to move, maneuvered his way into an illegal lane and started to shove his way forward with his near James Bond moves. An aggrieved Nigerian targeted him and tactically blocked him, at least to point out his misbehavior to him. Then the unusual happened, the Nigerian James Bond stepped out of his car and spectators expected he was going to angrily land the man a slap for obstructing him. But I bet the guy shocked everyone even the narrator of the story when all he did was ask the young man just one question: “Hey guy, CAN ONLY YOU CHANGE NIGERIA?” He said that and walked back into his car.

Senators Plan To Buy Nigeria's Assets, Don't Sell - Falana Tells Buhari.

Lagos lawyer, Femi Falana, has kicked against suggestions that Nigeria should sell off its national assets to raise funds for the country’s ailing economy.

Nigeria’s business mogul and Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, had suggested that the federal government should sell off some national assets like the multi-billion dollar Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas Limited, NLNG, and use the proceeds to pull the country from the current economic recession.

“If I had challenges in my company, I would not hesitate to sell assets to remain afloat, to get to the better times. It doesn’t make any sense for me to keep any assets and then suffocate the whole organization,” Mr. Dangote, who is the chairman, Dangote Group, told CNBC Africa.

The grave misdeed of too much dependence on sale of crude oil for revenue generation cannot be overemphasized, this is why, when oil prices fell from more than $100 a barrel to about $40, the naira lost more than a third of its value and is still falling.

For the foreseeable future, signs abound that the price of oil will remain low, not only because of oversupply in the market but also as a result of several other indices, green technology is catching up both in cost and efficiency, also manufacturing, ICT, agriculture and other viable alternatives to oil are been embraced around the world as part of efforts to create a stable economy in order to withstand global uncertainty.
