The atmosphere is charged in Edo State ahead of today’s governorship election, as security agents from all indications have provided water tight security across the state.

The presence of the about 25,000 policemen deployed to the state is being felt, as over five thousand security operatives were sited at the premises of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) at Aduwawa, Benin City.

Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room has called on the political parties participating in the election to conduct themselves in a manner that does not encourage violence by their supporters, as they would be held liable for their activities that trigger violence.

The presence of soldiers was also felt at strategic points in the state particularly in border towns between the state and Delta State. According to Vanguard the army had plans to block all entry points into the state from last midnight.

Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC), on its part, said a total of 15, 250 personnel had been deployed by the Corps to ensure a peaceful conduct of the election. The NSCDC acting Deputy Commandant General, Operations, Mr. Hillary Madu, disclosed this while addressing some personnel of the Corps yesterday.

Madu said the specialised units included that of the Special Weapon and Tactics (SWAT) unit, Kernel units, Counter Terrorism unit, undercover officers and others. According to him, all the personnel deployed will work in synergy with other security agencies in the state to make the election free, fair and credible.
