Court Sentences 16 To Life Imprisonment For Adulterating Diesel

A Federal High Court in Calabar on Tuesday sentenced 16 persons to life imprisonment for adulterating about 100 tons of petroleum product suspected to be Automotive Gas Oil, also known as diesel.

The suspects were arrested on July 7, 2016 by the operatives of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps along the Brass River in Bayelsa State while heading towards the sea on a vessel, MV ALEZZA LILAH.

In a four-count amended charge made available to the Southern City News on Tuesday, the offence which dwelt on conspiracy and adulteration, ran contrary to sections 1 (17) and (18) (a) and (i) of the Miscellaneous Offences Act, Cap, M17 LFN 2004 and punishable under the sections.

Bill to establish National Fitness Day in Nigeria scales second reading

A bill that seeks to dedicate a whole day for health fitness exercise for Nigerians has scaled the second reading in the House of Representatives.

The bill, which is being sponsored by Diri Douye, a lawmaker from Bayelsa State, got the approval of the House to proceed to the committee stage at Tuesday’s plenary.

While making case for the bill’s passage, Mr. Douye said a lack of physical activities often results in poor health or worse.

World’s Oldest Living Person, Marks 117th Birthday (Photo)

Italy’s Emma Morano, the world’s oldest living person, marked her 117th birthday yesterday, blowing out all the candles on her cake.

Beaming at the attention, Morano took in the festivities for her milestone celebration sitting in an armchair in her one-room apartment in the northern town of Verbania, joined by her two elderly nieces, a pair of caregivers and her long-time physician.

50kg bag of rice now N8,000 in Ebonyi – CBN

Central Bank of Nigeria Tuesday in Yenagoa said that a 50 kg bag of Nigeria rice is selling in Ebonyi for N8,000. This was disclosed by the Acting Director, Corporate Communication, CBN, Mr Isaac Okoroafor, in Bayelsa State. 

Speaking at a sensitization workshop for the CBN Anchor programme for farmers, he said: “We should eat Nigerian rice provided for by the CBN Anchor Programme; 50 Kg of local rice is now N8, 000 in Ebonyi. 

Video- Brazilian footballers on ill fated flight were all having fun.

A chartered plane with a Brazilian first division football team, crashed near Medellin while on its way to the finals of a regional tournament. 75 people on-board the ill-fated flight died while 6 survived.

The aircraft, which had departed from Santa Cruz, Bolivia, was transporting the Chapecoense team from southern Brazil for the first leg of a two-game Copa Sudamericana final against Atletico Nacional of Medellin, which was due to be played on Wednesday November 30th.

Churches drag el-Rufai to court over regulation of preaching,

The Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, PFN, has instituted a case before Justice Hajara Gwadah of Kaduna State High Court against Governor Nasir el-Rufai and two others. PFN asked the court to declare as null and void a controversial executive bill before Kaduna State House of Assembly, which seeks to strengthen a moribund 1984 Kaduna State law that regulates preaching in the state. 

The case, filed by President of PFN, Professor (Rev) Femi Ehinmidu, through the Counsel of PFN, Sunday Akani, joined Kaduna State House of Assembly and Attorney General of the state. The PFN filed the case on August 12, and it came up for hearing yesterday.

Plane Crash: Brazil Declares Three Days Of National Mourning

Brazil has declared three days of national mourning after a plane carrying the Chapecoense football team crashed in Colombia in the early hours of Tuesday, killing 75- footballers, journalists and crew members.

Six of the 81 people on the plane – three footballers, two crew and a journalist – survived the disaster. Another footballer who was pulled alive from the plane’s wreckage died later in hospital.

White House rebuts Trump vote fraud claim

The White House says there is no evidence to support Donald Trump's claim of widespread voter fraud in the 2016 US presidential election.

Press Secretary Josh Earnest dismissed the president-elect's unsubstantiated allegations that millions of people had cast illegal votes.

Mr Trump also alleged voter fraud in Virginia, New Hampshire and California, states which Hillary Clinton won.

First new HIV vaccine trial begins in Africa

Ahead of the World AIDS Day 2016 on Thursday, scientists have launched the first Human Immuno-deficiency Virus (HIV) vaccine efficacy study anywhere, for over seven years, in South Africa.

According to the United States National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), the study, called HVTN 702, is to test whether an experimental vaccine regimen safely prevents infection among South African adults. It involves a new version of the only HIV vaccine candidate ever shown to provide some protection against the virus.

DPR Discovers 87 Filling Stations Operating Without Approval

The Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) on Monday said it had discovered 87 filling stations operating without its approval in the last six months.

Its Director, Modecai Ladan, disclosed this in an interview with journalists on the sideline of the ongoing 17th biennial conference on Health, Safety and Environment organised by DPR.

He said that the agency had already clamped down on the illegal filling stations.

Kidnappers To Get Death Sentence In Lagos, Other Punishments

The Lagos State House of Assembly yesterday, November, 28 approved death sentence for kidnappers, whose victims died in their custody.

Fiery Catholic priest and Spiritual Director of Adoration Ministry, Emene, Enugu, Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka, has called for the arrest of more judges, saying that God was revolutionalising Nigeria with the arrest of judges who were hitherto, the untouchables. 

Mbaka, who commended the Federal Government for the arrest of the alleged corrupt judges, said that it would be nice to even arrest more judges as well, as those who influence them to pervert justice. The fiery priest, who stated this at the thanksgiving mass to mark the Enugu State Judiciary 2016/2017 legal year at the Adoration ground, Emene, said that though some of the arrested judges may not be corrupt as alleged, it is good that they be investigated and if found culpable, imprisoned to serve as a deterrent to others.

Daughter of former NAFDAC boss, Dora Akunyili, Njideka Akunyili Crosby beat her personal record last Thursday when she sold one of her paintings for almost $1.1 million at Sotheby’s Contemporary Art Evening Sale.

The painting named Drown (pictured above) which was done in 2012, was initially estimated to sell for $200,000 – $300,000 but was eventually sold for $1,092,500.

Governor Ortom goes divine says God is the real Governor of Benue State.

Benue Governor, Samuel Ortom said that God is the real governor of the state. He stated this Sunday, November 27th, in Gboko at a ceremony held to mark the 40th anniversary of the Full Gospel Revival Crusade Incorporated Nigeria.

"I am the governor but the Real Governor is God,” he said.
He urged the congregation to join him in executing God’s counsel so that the revival in Benue would blossom. Making a reference to Job 36: 11-12, Ortom said his desire was for the people to live a fulfilled life by being on the side of God. The governor congratulated Full Gospel Revival Crusade Inc. Nigeria for clocking 40 and reiterated his administration’s readiness to partner with the church.

450 ex-policemen gets pension justice after waiting 46 years.

The Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate (PTAD) has enrolled about 220,000 pensioners and uncovered 9,000 ghost payees, its Executive Secretary Mrs. Sharon Ikeazor, said yesterday.

According to her, 450 ex-Biafran policemen, who were pardoned in 2000 by ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo, would soon get their pension and gratuities.

The former Biafran policemen will get pension justice 46 years after. The civil war ended in January 1970.

FG to import crude oil from Niger Republic, plans 1,000-km pipeline.

Lawyers petition US embassy, insist IMN is threat to peace in Nigeria,

A group of legal practitioners in the country, under the aegis of Lawyers Initiative For Civil Rights Advancement in Nigeria, has petitioned the United States Embassy in Nigeria, alerting it of the imminent security threat posed by the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, IMN. 

The group, in the letter it addressed to the United States Ambassador to Nigeria, insisted that members of the IMN, otherwise known as Shiite sect, had posed several security threat not just to Nigeria, but also to other west African countries. The letter, which was signed by LICRAN Director of Research & Advocacy, Mr. Unande Terrace, yesterday, described the IMN as an Iranian-backed rebel group.

The Ogun state chairman of All Progressives Congress, Roqeeb Adeniji, has died. According to family sources, the politician who was fondly called ‘Baba Computer’ died yesterday night after a brief illness. He was being rushed to the hospital when he died. May his soul rest in peace, Amen.

Who is fighting Nigeria’s Cause?

He made the announcement in a video message outlining what he intends to do first when he takes office in January.

The TPP trade deal was signed by 12 countries which together cover 40% of the world's economy.

South West Governors Join Forces To Tackle Economic Recession

Governors in the South West Region of Nigeria have joined forces to tackle socio-economic problems confronting the six states and militating against development even as they tackle recession by leveraging on comparative advantages in the zone.

Hosted by the Oyo State Governor, Abiola Ajimobi, other governors of Lagos, Ogun, Ekiti, Osun and Ondo States came together for the first time without recourse to political or ideological differences.

This means that INEC is set to hold the election and will not yield to the postponement appeal. It is also alleged that Jegede has lost out already, since INEC only recognizes Jimoh Ibrahim as PDP’s candidate.

The chairman, Prof Mahmood Yakubu arrived yesterday in Ondo State and was welcomed by members of the commission as seen in the photo above.

FAAN to review toll payment at airports

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN , is to review existing toll payment at Nigerian airports, just as Senate vows to deal with aviation fuel cartel. 

FAAN’s decision is in response to Senate Committee on Aviation’s directives that the authority should stop collecting tolls from vehicles entering the airports to drop passengers. This directives by the Deputy Chairman of Senate Committee on Aviation, Senator Bala Ibn Na-Alla was issued during an interactive session yesterday with Heads of aviation parastatals ;Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, NCAA, Nigerian Airspace Management Agency ,NAMA, Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, FAAN, and Accident Investigation Bureau, AIB. 

Borno State govt bans Shi'ites movement in the state

Borno State government has banned members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria aka Shi'ites and other religious bodies from holding any procession in the state. This directive is contained in a statement released Monday by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Usman Jidda Shuwa. According to the state government, the move became necessary so that the relative peace and security in the state can be sustained. The statement in part reads:

"As part of efforts to ensure the sustainability of the current appreciable degree of peace and security in the state, the Borno State Government, as part of its statutory obligations, has put in place a number of stringent measures to improve the situation and forestall any likely breach of law and order within the framework of extant security guidelines.

Alleged $1.6bn Oil Scam: EFCC re-arraigns Diezani’s ally, Omokore, 3 others.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, yesterday, dragged the Chairman of Atlantic Energy Brass Development Limited and Atlantic Energy Drilling Concept Limited, Jide Omokore, before Justice Nnamdi Dimgba, over alleged criminal diversion of over $1.6 billion belonging to the Federal Government under the guise of oil swap. 

According to court papers, Mr. Omokore and the others claimed they had the expertise and the wherewithal to procure crude oil from the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, and process same and deliver the monetary equivalent of 5,652,227 barrels of crude oil to them by the corporation. 

Ngige: FG is Targeting 50% Population under Social Security Scheme

The federal government monday said itss social security scheme policy on job creation and employment will target 50 per cent of the nation’s population which will eventually have a ripple effect on the economy.

Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, said government decision to employ 200,000 graduates in the first phase of its social intervention scheme, despite teething economic challenges, is an eloquent expression of its dogged commitment to lift millions of Nigerians out of poverty and promised that more jobs were coming.

Fraud: How A Man Exchanged N1.7m For Fake Dollars

A bureau de change operator, Usman Nafada, has been arrested by the police for allegedly conniving with an accomplice at large to swindle one Abdullahi Uba out of N1.7m.

It was learnt the victim had approached Nafada on November 16, 2016, at the Obalende area of Lagos State to help him change the sum to dollars.

Nafada was said to have told Uba that he did not have hard currency for the exchange. He, however, reportedly collected the money from Uba and took it to his “partner.”

Troops in the 33 Artillery Brigade have arrested a fake soldier identified as Adam Alexander in Bauchi state. The 22-year-old boy from Maiduguri Borno State, was arrested on Friday November 18th where he was trying to sell a stolen phone Samsung Galaxy Note 5 for N70,000.

Announcing his arrest, the deputy director of the media in the army, Captain Sunday Akinkunmi, added that the suspect was arrested in the Wunti market.

Govt alone can’t bring about needed development — Ekweremadu.

Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu, has stressed the need for well-meaning Nigerians to support in the provision of social amenities, saying government alone could not engender development. Abducted Wives Of Nasarawa Commissioner Freed

Two wives of a public official kidnapped in Nasarawa State have been released.

Rabi Aliyu and Larai Aliyu, wives of the Nasarawa State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Aliyu Tijjani, who were abducted from Nasarawa town, have regained their freedom.

The spokesman of the Nasarawa State Police Command, Kenedy Idrissu, disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria yesterday in Lafia.

In India- Train derailment kills 120, survivor narrates ordeal

One survivor said he was sleeping around 3 a.m. Sunday as the train traveled through northern India."All of a sudden there was a massive jerk," Ravindra Pathak said in the aftermath of the deadly derailment. "Our heads collided with the roof of the carriage."

At least 120 people died when the Patna-Indore passenger train derailed, according to Rajesh Modak, deputy inspector general of police in Kanpur. Rescue teams are working on the last overturned car, while the other cars have been cleared of people, Modak said.

Reps summon Prisons boss, perm sec over handling of funds

The House of Representatives Committee on Public Accounts has invited the Comptroller General of Prisons, Mr. Ja’ afaru Ahmed and the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information and Culture, Mrs. Ayotunde Adesugba to explain why their staff have failed to retire funds approved to them.

Also, the officers are to give reasons for failing to remit the Valued Added Tax (VAT) deductions to the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) correctly and promptly as required by law.

A US City renames "Good Friday" to "Spring Holiday"

The US city of Bloomington in Indiana has renamed Good Friday and Columbus Day as "Spring Holiday" and "Fall Holiday" to be more "inclusive".

Mayor John Hamilton said the move would "better reflect cultural sensitivity in the workplace", local media said.

Bloomington is a traditionally liberal city. Its county gave Hillary Clinton 58.6% in the presidential election.

No fewer than seven persons were injured when disagreement broke out at a meeting of Lagos State Chapter, of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in Apapa Local Government. The meeting called by Mr. Morufu Gbadamosi, chairman APC Apapa-Iganmu Local Council Development Area, LCDA, last Thursday, was to discuss the party’s programmes. But the members demanded that allegations of misappropriation of party funds, running a one-man show, diversion of empowerment slots for members and others should be addressed.
