Nigerian education academy begins yearly congress today

The Nigerian Academy of Education (NAE) will hold its 31st annual congress from today to Friday, November 4 at the Main Events Hall of Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education (AIFCE), Owerri.

The theme of the congress is “Education and sustainable development.”

Briefing The Guardian on the event in Owerri, the Imo State capital at the weekend, the Secretary of the Local Organising Committee (LOC), Michael Gbenga Ajileye said the President of the academy, Prof. Udogie Michael Ivowi, Chairman of the committee and Provost of the hosting institution, Dr. Blessing Ijioma, consultant to the committee, Emeritus Prof. Obioha Chima Nwanna and other members of the committee have concluded arrangements to ensure the success of the programme.
He added that honorary fellow award would be conferred on the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Anthony Anwukah, five other people and 25 new members who have made significant contributions to the growth of education in the country.

Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha who is the special guest of honour would declare the congress open at 3:00p.m today.

According to Ajileye: “Membership of the academy is based on exceptional contributions to the theory and practice of education in Nigeria and it is drawn primarily from universities, research institutes, colleges of education, Ministry of Education or its parastatals. It is through nomination of suitably qualified candidates by active and financial members, provided that vacancies exist.”

He continued: “The academy facilitates interaction and communication among education stakeholders through its annual congresses.

“It serves in advisory capacity to various governments of the federation and the promotion of high standards at all levels of the educational system. It is also a national forum for the dissemination of ideas to the general public.”

Other distinguished contributors to the development of education who would be conferred with honorary fellowship awards are the Chief Executive Officer of FINLAB, Chief Uzomba Nwaije; Publisher of Source Magazine, Comfort Obi and the founder of Start Right Group of Schools, Nneoha Mercy Eluwa.
