One year after, DSS officially announces death of officers to their widows.

The Department of State Services ,DSS has officially confirmed to widows of its seven operatives who were ambushed by militants at Ishawo area of Lagos , that they are dead. This is coming one year after the incident occurred.

The slain operatives were on a mission to rescue a kidnapped woman when they were ambushed and killed. They included ; Uzo Nwafor, O.O Kayode, Luke Amole, S. Owolabi, S. Adegbite, Ben Mafo and Bayo Adeniyi.

Despite several publications, as well as confessional statement by a militant who was later arrested by the Inspector-General of Police Intelligence Response Team, of how the operatives were killed, the Service insisted that its men were still alive. It also assured their relatives that they would return to them in good condition.

But according to report on Vaguard, its present position was not unconnected with the discovery of uniforms of the operatives in an uncompleted building at Ishawo , by Military personnel, during the mop up operation of the creeks. Vanguard was reliably informed that widows of the slain operatives were invited to the Service Lagos command at Shagisha last Saturday, where their fears were confirmed , following news that their husbands were dead.

After much consolation and words of encouragement from some senior officers, one of who came from Abuja, the widows were handed a cheque of N250,000 each, for the burial of their late husbands. The widows were also told to remain in their respective official apartments until their late husbands benefits would be paid.

However an aggrieved relative of one of the slain operatives, Mr Nwafor Paul, wondered why the DSS kept mum over the issue for one year, only to offer the families money to bury their dead without the corpses. According to Paul “ After over one year of sorrow, pains and false hope, the DSS has finally alerted widows of its missing officers that their husbands died as heroes in the line of duty.

It gave each of them 250,000 as its own support to bury their husbands. When they asked for their bodies, they were told that they could not locate their bodies.

“The Minister of Information once said that most Nigerians spent up to 100,000 on a bottle of Champagne, so we ask, if the lives of these fallen heroes are worth only about two bottles of Champagnes? We pray and hope that the families get all their due benefits as they wallow in their pains”. “I am making a case not only for my brother but for all the security personnel who put their lives in harm’s way for the sake of this nation.

While some people are paid to loot our money, those people who put their lives on the line are treated as nobody . They say what goes around comes around, hence, as we continue to wallow in our pains, we thank President Buhari and the DSS as we lay this on the table of God Almighty! God bless Nigeria!”

Sources from the DSS confirmed the invitation of the widows . Sources said “They were invited and officially informed that their husbands were dead. Aside the N250,000 each meant for the burial, they were also given additional cheques where some of them got as much as N6 million . The amount varies according to their late husbands levels.”
