The Nigerian Youth Parliament which is the legislative arm for youth in Nigeria held the maiden edition of its annual press dinner/lecture on Saturday, 20th January, 2017. The event titled: The roles of fast emerging social media in the socio-political economic development and good governance was attended by notable dignitaries and stakeholders from all around the federation.

Dignitaries at the event include, German Ambassador to Nigeria H.E Michael Zenner, The Oba Aladetoyinbo Deji of Akure, Senator Dino Melaye, Hon. Tony Nwulu and many others.

The senate President Bukola Saraki who was scheduled as a special guest of honour for the event couldn’t make it due to his tight schedule. However he was ably represented by Sen. Dino Melaye who delivered his goodwill message. He gave a highly inspiring speech on how youth can influence positively on leadership by building capacity, taking responsibility and been resilient.

The future of the world is in the hands of the young ones but unfortunately youth of today are not ready for leadership, he said. Mentioning world leaders like Nelson Madela, Martin Luther King as men who served their country from a very young age.

Our Youth need to plan, articulate themselves and picture the future they want to feature in. To take charge, they need to take responsibility by building capacity first.

The Senator who spoke for about fifteen minutes said youth preparedness for leadership has become highly essential as the elders are already at the departure lounge.

We need to ask our officials question, it is a crime to keep silent in an unjust society. Every leader must be answerable. This he said while revealing his ambition to run for presidency in the nearest future. Dino is optimistic that he will win when he runs for the office of the President of Nigeria.

Ending the speech, he charged the youth to catapult their thinking to a “Yes I can” mindset. There is nothing the youth cannot do if they put their mind to it.

God bless Nigeria.
