Enhancing Pedagogical Skills in Nigeria- University of Sussex and NUC organizes one-week training for University Lecturers and Professors.

Monday 25th of September, 2017 a one-week training for the enhancement of pedagogical skills for Nigerian lecturers and professors which was organized by the National Universities Commission(NUC) in collaboration with University of Sussex was declared opened by key stakeholders of the industry.

Minister of Education Mallam Adamu represented by Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Sunny Echono, The NUC Executive Secretary, Prof. Abubakar Rasheed, Prof. Michael Davies (Pro-Vice Chancellor for Research, University of Sussex), Vice-Chancellor National Open University of Nigeria, Prof. Abdalla Adamu and others.

The one week training which is themed “Transformative Higher Education Pedagogy and Practice” is been held at the Nile University hall. The training is aimed at addressing among many other issues, peculiar challenges amongst lecturers. It is also set to impact them with new pedagogic skills that will further enhance teaching and learning in Nigerian Universities.

Speaking at the opening event, The Executive Secretary of NUC said, “This training is based on providing an opportunity for professors and lecturers in Nigerian Universities to improve on their pedagogic skills. You may recall that there have been some debates whether our professors should have a Postgraduate Diploma in Education before they can be good teachers. This training and other periodical professional development courses for our lecturers in modular formats will definitely achieve same quality objective which will in turn reflect in the quality of university graduates.”

Prof. Michael Davis, the Pro-Vice Chancellor for Research at University of Sussex who also spoke at the opening event pointed out that the training will expose lecturers to modern educational skills and facilities that are implemented at University of Sussex.

82 Lecturers and Professors have been carefully selected from Universities across the nation to be at this training, they are expected to lead the change process in our education, Sunny Echono who represented the Minister of Education said. 

Speaking further he said the training will teach up to date recent research in education globally and it will ensure continuity of quality education in Nigerian Universities.
