Photos from maiden edition of Peace Picnic

Peace Picnic a peace building event organised by Mercy Peace Initiative in collaboration with other CSOs held on the 1st of October, 2019. The event played host to Abuja residence and guest from surrounding communities.

Peace Picnic is a community based event with the aim to address social violence prone issues. With all of the hatred, anger and insecurity in the society, there is an air of aggression, frustration and dejection and this is fueled majority by ethnic, religious, political rivalry and land disputes. All of these are
further compounded by climate change and extremist ideologies, leaving people within the community with little or no safe space to air their grievances other than social media.

Peace picnic aims to bridge the gap by providing a safe space to engage with youths and all cadres of people in the community using socializing platforms and also provide a platform to foster and strengthen national unity and peace. The latest edition held at the Municipal local government and was attended by people from Kwali, Bwari, Mararaba, Nyanyan communities and others. Peace Picnic is being organized in the framework of peace building actions in the Federal Capital Territory but with wider implications all over the country. The goal is to promote and facilitate intercultural dialogue and tolerance among Nigerians
The event took place from 12.00pm until 6.00pm and entry was free. There was live music, dancing, games, peace talk and refreshment.

We were particularly excited to have Toguna Peace and development foundation talk to us on the basic principles of peace and other organizations talked on how we can stop stereotype and promote unity, as unity is key to having peace.

Highlight of the event was the unity dance. Guest at the event all held hands regardless of tribe, religion or class, to dance to national songs as a symbol of oneness, unity and peace, it was a very passionate session.

Subsequent editions are set to hold in various communities around the country so stay tuned for update. Check out photos from the event below:
